HELMETS

Any helmet is better than no helmet, right? Don’t go looking for a bargain when it is time to buy a helmet.

A properly designed and well-fitted helmet can save your life. The chance of receiving serious head injuries is five times greater if you don’t wear a helmet.

Head injuries are not always fatal, but serious brain injuries can result in bruising, torn tissues, bleeding and other physical damage to the brain.

Many states prohibit riding a motorcycle without a helmet, but in other states, the choice is up to you.

To protect lives, the Department of Transportation (DOT) requires that all motorcycle helmets sold in the United States meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 218, the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard #218.

It appears that the DOT awards certification to any helmets that want break in half when you drop them on the ground.

Look for the DOT sticker on the outside of the helmet, and then look for the permanent one inside the helmet. You should also look for certification from the Snell Memorial Foundation, https://smf.org/ .

Make sure the helmet fits your properly. Head shapes vary from person to person. So, check pressure spots and loose spots. A properly sized helmet will fit your head evenly and snugly.

Safe Riding,
