As riders, we must always remember that we are not a lone on the road. Automobiles are by far the majority, and intersections are a real threat to motorcyclists.
The most common of motorcycle accidents is a motorist turning left in front of the motorcycle. Regardless of who has the legal right of the way, the automobile will always win the motorcycle vs car battle.
- When stopped at an intersection, make sure that you are aware of the vehicles behind you as well as the ones in the front.
- Try to position yourself for a quick exit.
- Leave enough wiggle room between your bike and the car in front to get out if something goes wrong.
- Make your intentions clear. This means staying in the right-most part of the lane, as far from oncoming traffic as possible.
- Wait a few moments after the light turns green to make sure that a vehicle has not been waiting to make a left-hand turn or speed through a red light.
- Some experienced riders advocate riding through intersections with a car to your left which will shield you from the left-hander.
- Lastly, do what you can to be seen.
I hope these tips are helpful when negotiating intersections.
