Poole’s Mill Covered Bridge

Poole’s Mill Covered Bridge is the showcase of Poole’s Mill State Park in Ball Ground, GA. The current bridge was built in 1901 and spans the shoals of Settendown Creek.

After years of disrepair, the structure was converted from private ownership and dedicated as a county park in 1997. Poole’s Mill State Park spans 10 acres of property.

Cherokee Chief George Welch constructed a grist mill at this location on his extensive homeplace in 1820. Chief Welch later added an uncovered bridge.

After the 1838 removal of the Cherokees, the land was sold to Jacob Scudder. Dr. M. L. Pool purchased it from Scudder’s family in 1947. The mill burned in 1959 and the original bridge washed away in 1899.

The current 96-foot bridge built in 1901 was constructed by Bud Gentry using the Town lattice design.

Parking and admission are free at Poole’s Mill State Park. There are several picnic areas, playgrounds, and family-friendly paved walking trails.

The covered bridge is short walk from the parking lot along a paved trail.
