CROMER’S MILL COVERED BRIDGE

The Cromer’s Mill Covered Bridge is located 8 miles south of Carnesville, Georgia at Nails Creek.

The Cromer’s settled on Nails Creek in Franklin County in 1845. Prior to the Civil War, the family operated a woolen mill near this site. Subsequently, the area maintained a cotton gin, flour mill and sawmill, though all operations had ceased by 1943.

In 1907, the county contracted James M. Hunt to build the present 110-foot bridge. Constructed in the Town lattice design, the bridge’s web of planks crisscrossing at 45- to 60-degree angles are fastened with wooden pegs, or trunnels, at each intersection. Will Cromer, a descendant of the original family, built the stone abutments.

Cromer’s Mill Covered Bridge is surrounded by forest on a dirt road which is not visible from the GA – 106 North. Google Map directions state to turn right off GA-106 N onto Baker Road to access the bridge. However, visitors are not able to see or access the bridge from Baker Road unless on foot, 4-wheeler, or dirt bike.

Fortunately, I was able to locate the bridge with the assistance of two local teenagers who were riding in the woods near the bridge on a dirt bike and 4-wheeler. The young men guided me past Baker Road to the next road which is Cromer’s Mill Bridge Road.

Turn right onto Cromer’s Mill Bridge Road, continue straight and turn right onto the 1st gravel road which is unmarked. The bridge is located about 1/4 – 1/2 mile down the gravel road which is easily accessible by any motorcycle.
