The Iron Horse near UGA, Athens GA, Watkinsville, GA

The Iron Horse

One of the most incredible abstract iron sculptures in the southern United States is in rural Georgia. The University of Georgia (UGA) Iron Horse is located on a farm near Watkinsville, GA on GA Highway 15.

The Iron Horse sculpture was created by Abbott Pattison in 1954.  In 1959 the Iron Horse was moved from UGA campus to a farm field to avoid pranksters and sophomoric humiliation.

According to Wikipedia, the early history of the sculpture was depicted in the 1962 National Educational Television Film, Pegasus Without Wings, as well as the 1980 William VanDerkloot documentary, Iron Horse.

I really enjoyed my first cold weather ride of the year to see, touch and experience the Iron Horse. The temperature was 41 degrees and breezy which equates to 12 degrees cooler once you hit 30 mph on the motorcycle. I was wearing my Milwaukee Leather Women 15-inch-high rise riding boots. I am very happy to report these boots kept my feet and lower legs warm and toasty! Check out the Milwaukee Women Leather Riding boots available at www.motorcycleridingmoms.com.

If you’re ever visiting the Athens, GA area, I highly recommend taking a short detour to nearby Watkinsville, GA to visit the Iron Horse sculpture. The parking and admission are free. The address is GA Hwy 15, Watkinsville, GA.

Directions: Take Hwy 129 out of Athens going SE until Watkinsville. Take GA 15 for 11 miles and horse is in pasture on the left near the road.

Safe Riding,

Lolo
