Motorcycle ride exploring Georgia State Parks

George L. Smith State Park

I love exploring nature, fishing and gardening. Some of my fondest childhood memories are visiting my grandparents in the country where I could fish, pick fruit/vegetables and explore the woods. It’s no surprise that I get extremely excited when planning motorcycle rides to visit Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites. One of my fondest rides was to the George L. Smith State Park considered one of Georgia’s hidden treasures.

The George L. Smith State Park is 1,634 acres located in Emanuel County. Per Wikipedia, the park is named after George L. Smith, a former speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives and Emanuel County native. The park is best known for its location on a 412-acre mill pond dotted with cypress trees. The park’s other attractions include one of only two working grist mills in GA, covered bridge, and the dam of the Watson Mill. There are 11 miles for hikers, runners and cyclists.

The cypress trees in the pond are hypnotic and magical. I enjoyed watching the birds, canoeists and fishermen. I could have sat on the boardwalk for hours meditating, relaxing just starring at the beautiful mill pond.

The park is home to an abundance of wildlife from white ibis to rare gopher tortoises. Nature enthusiasts can look for beaver dams, blue heron, and other wading birds.  There is camping available for any type of adventure that one could imagine. There are primitive campgrounds, cozy cottages, RV campsites, picnic shelters, group shelter and playgrounds.
